Heat-transfer performance comparison between overlapped and woven spacers for membrane distillation
2016
Sustainable production of fresh water from seawater desalination is a problem of crucial importance nowadays. Recently, some desalination technologies are taking advantage from the coupling with renewable resources. Among emerging technologies, Membrane Distillation (MD) is considered as one of the most promising as it can be easily powered by solar thermal energy or waste-heat. As an emerging technology, efforts are required to optimize MD unit geometry and operating conditions in order to reduce fresh water production specific cost. Temperature polarization phenomenon is a well-known detrimental effect for the MD process. Spacers are traditionally used to enhance mixing and shrink tempera…
Determination of90Sr in environmental samples with resonance ionization spectroscopy in collinear geometry
1994
A new, fast technique for trace analysis of the radioactive isotopes89Sr and90Sr in environmental samples has been developed. Conventional mass separation is combined with resonance ionization spectroscopy in collinear geometry, which provides high selectivity and sensitivity. In addition, a chemical separation procedure for sample preparation has been developed. The described technique was used to determine the90Sr content in ≈ 870 m3 air samples collected near Munich during and shortly after the Chernobyl reactor accident in April 1986. The content of90Sr was measured to be 1.4 mBq per m3, corresponding to 1.6 × 109 atoms of90Sr per sample. This value is in good agreement with the results…
Simultaneous application of vacuum and sweep gas in a polypropylene membrane contactor for the recovery of dissolved methane from water
2021
Abstract Vacuum and nitrogen as sweep gas were used simultaneously (combination mode) to generate the driving force in a microporous polypropylene membrane contactor for the recovery of dissolved methane from water. Experiments were carried out under different liquid flow-rates (5.0–28.0 L h−1), N2 flow-rates (0.5–1.5 L h−1) and vacuum pressures (0–480 mbar). The maximum removal efficiency of methane was >90% at moderate values of gas-to-liquid ratios (G/L) and vacuum of 0.2 and ≤ 200 mbar, respectively. Removal efficiencies obtained in combination mode were usually higher than when using vacuum or sweep gas, separately. To achieve a methane content >35% in the recovered gas, G/L values low…
Nitric oxide enhances Th9 cell differentiation and airway inflammation
2014
International audience; Th9 cells protect hosts against helminthic infection but also mediate allergic disease. Here we show that nitric oxide (NO) promotes Th9 cell polarization of murine and human CD4(+) T cells. NO de-represses the tumour suppressor gene p53 via nitrosylation of Mdm2. NO also increases p53-mediated IL-2 production, STAT5 phosphorylation and IRF4 expression, all essential for Th9 polarization. NO also increases the expression of TGFβR and IL-4R, pivotal to Th9 polarization. OVA-sensitized mice treated with an NO donor developed more severe airway inflammation. Transferred Th9 cells induced airway inflammation, which was exacerbated by NO and blocked by anti-IL-9 antibody.…
CD14+CD16+ monocytes in coronary artery disease and their relationship to serum TNF-α levels
2004
SummaryMonocytes play a central role in the inflammatory disease atherosclerosis. CD14+CD16+ monocytes are considered proinflammatory monocytes, as they have an increased capacity to produce proinflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α, and are elevated in various inflammatory diseases. We hypothesized that patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) have increased levels of CD14+CD16+ monocytes, and that CD14+CD16+ monocytes are associated with inflammation markers. We investigated CD14+CD16+ monocytes in 247 patients with CAD and 61 control subjects using flow cytometry. In addition serum concentrations of TNF-α, IL-6, and Hs-CRP were assessed. Patients with CAD had higher levels of CD14+CD16…
Iron oxide-based magnetic photocatalysts: Recent developments, challenges, and environmental applications
2021
Abstract Magnetic separation of the solid photocatalyst from the reacting suspension has received great interest in recent research because it offers a suitable way for removing and recycling the heterogeneous photocatalytic material particles preventing the agglomeration and sedimentation during and after their use. The use of iron oxides such as heterogeneous photocatalysts is an appropriate choice to obtain a suitable photocatalyst easily separable from the fluid. This chapter presents a detailed investigation of iron oxide-based magnetic photocatalysts (IOMPs). We will discuss the required conditions for the synthesis of these photocatalysts, followed by their applications for the remov…
The effect of alertness and attention on the modulation of the beta rhythm to tactile stimulation
2021
Abstract Beta rhythm modulation has been used as a biomarker to reflect the functional state of the sensorimotor cortex in both healthy subjects and patients. Here, the effect of reduced alertness and active attention to the stimulus on beta rhythm modulation was investigated. Beta rhythm modulation to tactile stimulation of the index finger was recorded simultaneously with MEG and EEG in 23 healthy subjects (mean 23, range 19–35 years). The temporal spectral evolution method was used to obtain the peak amplitudes of beta suppression and rebound in three different conditions (neutral, snooze, and attention). Neither snooze nor attention to the stimulus affected significantly the strength of…
Cadmium and Copper Removal by a Granular Activated Carbon in Laboratory Column Systems
2000
Single and competitive removal of Cd and Cu from aqueous solutions by using Darco 12–20 mesh granular activated carbon in column systems has been investigated. Seven experiments modifying the initial pH and the flow rate were performed. Results showed the efficiency of activated carbon as a sorbent for both metals. pH is shown to be the decisive parameter on metal removal in the column; metal removal increases when the influent pH value is raised. The influence of the flow rate for the experimental conditions is negligible. Batch adsorption and column data are compared. Column modeling assuming local equilibrium and rate-controlled pore diffusion was performed.
Extraction of lanthanides and actinides by a magnetically assisted chemical separation technique based on CMPO-calix[4]arenes
2001
A novel particulate system carrying CMPO ligands pre-organised on a calixarene scaffold has been synthesised and demonstrated to extract Eu3+, Am3+ and Ce3+ at high efficiency from simulated nuclear waste streams.
Extramedullary Expansion of Hematopoietic Progenitor Cells in Interleukin (IL)-6–sIL-6R Double Transgenic Mice
1997
Soluble cytokine receptors modulate the activity of their cognate ligands. Interleukin (IL)-6 in association with the soluble IL-6 receptor (sIL-6R) can activate cells expressing the gp130 signal transducer lacking the specific IL-6R. To investigate the function of the IL-6–sIL-6R complex in vivo and to discriminate the function of the IL-6–sIL-6R complex from the function of IL-6 alone, we have established a transgenic mouse model. Double-transgenic mice coexpressing IL-6 and sIL-6R were generated and compared with IL-6 and sIL-6R single-transgenic mice. The main phenotype found in IL-6–sIL-6R mice was a dramatic increase of extramedullary hematopoietic progenitor cells in liver and spleen…
